A gastronomic journey to the village of Farmakas in Cyprus #EduTourism
Experience a gastronomy and wine and food journey in the village of Farmakas. At the winery of the area, you can enjoy tasting services and guided tours of the vineyards tasting the dominant variety which is the local red “Mavro Ampelissimo” and the local white variety Xynisteri which is grown on a smaller area.
The winery in the village of Farmakas is located at an altitude of 100 meters in the Troodos mountains and is 40 minutes from Nicosia and Lemesos. It is a small modern winery founded in 2015 by Daniel and Theoni who with great passion want to bring back the dynamics of the traditional Cypriot grape variety, Black Vineyard, and to preserve the traditional vineyards of the Farmakas area that are centuries old and are part of the cultural heritage of Cyprus.
The winery manages over 15 hectares of vineyards and is located on the slopes of the mountains surrounding the village of Farmakas, reaching an altitude of 1350m. The vines have an average age of 150 years and are perfectly adapted to the rocky mountainous environment of Farmakas. The unique combination of the old vines combined with the high altitude and the particular composition of the soil, along with the traditional winemaking and viticulture techniques, result in quality wines of distinctive character and complexity that will surprise you.
Afterwards you can taste the award-winning spoon sweets at the homemade sweets workshop in Farmakas. There, Eleni continues the tradition she learned from her grandmother by making spoon sweets, which won the first prize in a pancyprian competition, as well as marmalades, siousioukos, bonbonnieres, treats for weddings, christenings and various receptions.
Finally, at certain times of the year you can visit Maria’s workshop and taste all kinds of tomato products (fresh tomatoes, tomato juice, tomato paste, sun-dried tomatoes).
This is a route of particular gastronomic interest in the Nicosia region and EduTourism invites you to visit it and get to know the local products of Cyprus.
