In Nicosia, Cyprus, a field research was conducted in the framework of the project “Promotion of educational tourism for the promotion of natural and cultural heritage – EduTourism” in order to record the views of young tourism and education professionals on educational tourism. The result that emerged showed that the majority of the participants consider that Nicosia as a destination for educational tourism has elements of its natural environment, history, tradition, religious heritage and gastronomy to highlight.
The Tourism Development and Promotion Company (TDPC), one of the beneficiaries of the Act, created three educational tourism itineraries for the Nicosia area, covering the most popular themes highlighted through the field research.
The Gastronomic-Oinogastronomic route includes Ierapelos Wine Cellar – Farmakas, Sweet Koutaliou Eleni – Farmakas, M.K.K. Kakathimi – Farmakas. The visitor following this proposed route has the opportunity to taste, to observe and to be informed about the production and creation of traditional and non-traditional delicacies and drinks in the Nicosia area.
The second route concerns Tradition, Environment and Religious Heritage and includes the Athalassa Park, Cyprus Handicraft Centre, Agios Herakleidios Monastery, Agios Georgios – Kabi Church, Omeriye Mosque, Xyliatou Dam, Fikardou, “Pikrovrisi of Merika” Nature Trail. This route offers the visitor an experiential experience of getting to know the Nicosia region through the exploration of destinations with a traditional background.
The third route of cultural interest consists of the Venetian Walls of Nicosia, the Famagusta Gate of Nicosia, the archaeological site of Tamassos, the Eleftheria Monument, Omeriye Baths or Hamam Omeriye, Library, Learning Resource Center “Stelios Ioannou” University of Cyprus, Eleftheria Square. On this route the visitor comes into contact with monuments, museums and destinations with cultural background.
The three routes proposed by EduTourism in the context of a visit to Nicosia Cyprus are suitable for visitors who wish to get to know the destination through experiential activities, combining fun and tourism with education.
EduTourism is implemented in the framework of the INTERREG V-A Cooperation Programme “Greece – Cyprus 2014-2020” and is co-funded by the European Union (E.T.P.A.) and National Resources of Greece and Cyprus.
